Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
The preview shows Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is still the key figure among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
